Frequently Asked Questions

GENERAL QUESTIONS

Do I need a prescription or referral to start physical therapy?
In New York, you can start physical therapy through 'Direct Access,' which allows you to be treated for up to 10 visits or 30 days without a prescription. After that, a referral from a physician or other healthcare provider is required.

How can I schedule an appointment?
You can schedule an appointment by calling our office directly at 631-406-7042 or by filling out the request form on our website.

What should I wear to my first visit?
We recommend wearing comfortable, loose-fitting clothing that allows you to move easily. Athletic wear and sneakers are ideal for our specialized testing.

INSURANCE & PAYMENT

What insurance plans do you accept?
We accept most major insurance providers, including Medicare, Blue Cross Blue Shield, UnitedHealthcare, and Aetna. Please contact our office to verify your specific coverage.

Do you offer self-pay options?
Yes, we offer competitive self-pay rates for patients who do not have insurance or whose plans do not provide coverage for our specialized services.

How do I know if my plan covers vestibular therapy?
Our staff can assist in verifying your benefits before your first appointment. Simply provide your insurance information when you call to schedule.

WHAT TO EXPECT

What happens during the initial evaluation?
Your first visit includes a comprehensive assessment of your symptoms and history, followed by specialized testing for balance and eye movements, often using VNG technology.

How long are the treatment sessions?
Sessions typically last 45 to 60 minutes. You will work one-on-one with a licensed therapist specializing in dizziness and vestibular disorders.

Will the exercises make my symptoms worse?
Retraining the brain involves habituating to movement, which can briefly provoke mild dizziness. Your therapist will monitor you closely to ensure the process is effective and well-tolerated.

Will I feel dizzy or off-balance after my specialized treatment session?
While many patients feel immediate relief, certain canalith repositioning maneuvers or vestibular exercises may temporarily provoke symptoms. For your first visit, or if we are conducting VNG testing, we recommend bringing a companion to drive you home just in case.

How many visits will I need to see improvement?
The number of visits varies based on your specific condition. Simple BPPV can often be resolved in 1–3 visits, while chronic vestibular issues like neuritis or balance disorders may require 8–12 sessions scheduled weekly or bi-weekly to achieve lasting results.
